My first character was a monk in Freeport. I had gotten him up to about level 3 when our RL friend who introduced us to the game made a new Erudite character to play with me. He was bumming around Qeynos and we got tired of just talking in tells so I decided to run to Qeynos from Freeport. Well I got out my map of Antonica which came with the game (basically just artwork with no real resemblance to the in-game world) and plotted my course. I headed West and shortly after zoning into East Commons I saw my first giant! (yes they had giants and gryffons in EC back then) I had to get a closer look so I ran up to it and.. SPLAT.

Started over, looted my body and headed west once again. Got into West Commons and picked up a grizzly bear. Decided to just keep running as I seemed to be able to stay ahead of it. When I hit the shore of the pond in WC, I assumed it was the river I saw on my map. (which was actually the river between EK and NK) I had wanted to stop and see Rivervale on my way and figured I had passed it somehow, but with the bear on my tail I figured I should just cross the "river" and keep heading west, hoping to hit a zoneline somewhere. I dived in and got about 2 feet when the bear caught up and SPLAT.

Started over, decided not to worry about finding my corpse and decided to try swinging north and coming to Qeynos via the Halas area. Luckily a gnome stopped me before I zoned into Nektulos and told me I didn't want to go that way. He asked me where I was going and I told him Qeynos. He just kind of looked at me for a minute and then gave me a summoned light source and bid me good luck and ran off. I decided to just keep heading West, even though it was getting dark, because I had my cool new light source. This time I managed to make it all the way to Kithicor which I zoned into in the middle of the night. I made it about 40 steps and SPLAT.

Studying my map intently, I decided to try swinging south of the mountains and running West through Innothule and Feerott. Could hardly be more dangerous than the direct route, right? I left Freeport throught the South gate and headed for N Ro. Here I met a kind person who gave me a SoW. I decided to stick to the rock face of the mountains and just follow it all the way to South Karana and headed out at a dead run. Still night, light source gone, I ran off the edge of a huge dune at full speed and SPLAT.

Sent my friend a tell saying that if he wanted to play together he was going to have to come to Freeport. :P

Ah, sounds like great fun!
Those were the times of no maps, or hand drawn ones. Until you found them on the web.

my favorite memories of eq were back when people gathered in the ec tunnels to seel there stuff """SELLING ALL ON ME AT TORCH 2"" lol .
then there was the ONE year for halloween eq decorated the boat from butcherblock to freeport like a creepy ghost ship for halloween.
Eq was much funner cause we had an event for ever holliday . there was allways something going on.

Ah the memories come flooding back, hehe.

I can remember being a wee halfling trying to ak'anon (not realising that there was stone in pok) and running through gfay, into lfay and into steamfont. I can't count the number of times I was killed by a brownie. Being new to the game I felt like a total idiot that I had just been killed by something that only came up to my knees. lol Corpse run after corpse run just ended up leading to more deaths. Someone that had been stood by the gfay/lfay zone line realised that something must be wrong when they kept seeing my naked liddle body running past them and helped me get my corpse back and told me about the stone in pok.

Hehe boy did I feel silly.
